Finding Balance in Times of Uncertainty

Wow it’s a whole new world since I wrote my last newsletter. I hope you, family and friends are doing well. One way to handle this situation is to follow the guidelines for cleanliness, isolation, social distancing and take care of yourself that way. You can also build your immunity. Eat right, get the vitamins you need, exercise safely and get your 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Work on keeping stress as low as you can. Acknowledge your feelings, however try not to dwell in the ones that won’t help you.

I’m using the breath work techniques I learned in Guatemala. I’m doing my meditation and listening to inspiring videos, find the people who help you. Like some of you I’m using phone calls and Zoom to say connected. I told a friend I’m kind of zoomed out some days. It is too easy for me to get caught up in the computer, I’m balancing that with work on throwing stuff out and packing up my house. I’m especially trying to call my friends who don’t have computers. I offered to order online for an 85 year old friend, with no computer, who is having trouble finding a few things. I will ship to her address.

I’m taking the strategy of planning not hoarding. Ordering online I’m trying to keep about two to three weeks ahead of what I need. It is interesting how our personality types are such a big part of how we handle things. One of my top is arranger. My top strengths based personality trait is context. I’m thinking of my ancestors surviving famines in Ireland and other similar health situations in the USA. I watched Harriet an inspiring movie about a woman’s courage and honor. Harriet Tubman faced great adversity in freeing slaves through the Underground Railroad. If you like quirky Australian humor try Kath and Kim on Netflix they go through all kinds of setbacks.

I know it can be difficult but I’m trying to keep some focus on the positive things going on in the world. People are finding creative ways to connect. People are helping people in amazing ways. Right away I saw offers in nextdoor.com to help run errands for those who can’t. Last night on my social distanced walk with a friend we saw teddy bears in windows. Pollution is down, our air is cleaner. Scientists and researchers all over the world are collaborating. Business are being resourceful in redirecting like a distilleries now making hand sanitizer.

Many of us are looking at our values, including me. I’ve been working for three years to sell my home. During that time constantly running into new issues where no one could figure out the cause. I also had outdoor repairs where I could not get contractors and then had to be put on hold due to winter. My house goes on the market Tuesday. I want it to sell quickly however, I’ve let go of attachment to selling it. There are more important things to focus on. Years ago, for my wellness, I left a 24×7 website support management job for doing what I love in fitness. Being home more I’ve realized my schedule was still too overbooked.

“There will be very few occasions when you are absolutely certain about anything. You will consistently be called upon to make decisions with limited information. That being the case, your goal should not be to eliminate uncertainty. Instead, you must develop the art of being clear in the face of uncertainty.” Andy Stanley
