August 2015 – Reuniting

Summer can be a great time for reconnecting with people and places.  Many bands go on summer reunion tours, the casts of TV shows even have reunions. You might be seeing family members, classmates, colleagues and friends you have not seen in a very long time.  The internet has helped us reunite with those we have lost contact for a long time.  In addition to reuniting with people we can reunite with a place.  Revisiting a city you love or a place in nature is type of reunion.

I have a summer of all different kinds of wonderful reunions.  I also just returned from sailing in the Apostle Islands which is a magical place for me.  The air on the Great Lakes is so refreshing, I feel recharged.  Some areas are also cell phone free so it was awesome to be off the grid.

It has reminded me about needing a daily reuniting with myself.  The most important connection we can make is with ourselves.  I have busy days and feel scattered in many directions so that is part of the reason I meditate every day.  We are connected to our phones, computers, tv’s more hours than we are connected to ourselves.  In the first few minutes of meditation I find out how much I have missed myself.

This is my favorite poem of reuniting.  Love after Love

The time will come when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
